It seems that another concession is being made to try and buy MPs' votes on tuition fees tomorrow. In fact the coalition's original proposals seem to be in such tatters that we have to be careful where to walk in case we trip over them!
With this further concession, which only has an impact if salaries do not rise in line of inflation, then surely it is time to prospone Thursday's vote and spend longer in coming up with a policy that will have less of an impact on the future of higher education and the poorer in our society.

It's not just higher education policy that's awry. The whole Lib Dems education policy is now ridiculous. What are the policies on new academies and free schools? They open the way for poorly regulated schools that can be run by religious groups and fringe nutters. How do you feel about this as a Lib Dem and a teacher? There is a break with state comprehensives in pursuit of a vague right-wing notion of 'choice', which really isn't choice for all but for the wealthy and the religious because these changes are about social exclusion and middle-class entrenchment. Liberal values of meritocracy and secularism which the Lib Dems' education policies were founded on have been blown out of the water. The Lib Dems' coherent and progressive education policy is something that has always attracted votes and support beyond the party's normal electoral base. It has been pissed away for fast deal with a party most of whose members reject liberal values. What is the point of the Liberal Democrats now?
